Straw Hats and Rush Hats, A Complete Guide to Making Straw and Rush Hats, from Harvesting to Plaiting and Stitching
This little book is based on the author’s first-hand experience of making straw hats and rush hats from scratch. It gives a brief history of straw plaiting and describes the difference between wheat, rye, oat and barley straw. It also explains how to harvest and dry rushes (Juncus effusus). The seven straw hatplait is explained with a series of step-by-step diagrams. These are followed by instructions for joining in new straws, and for stitching the hat. This book is particularly suited for people interested in the complete process of straw or rush hat-making, including producing and using your own straw, or foraging for rushes.
